Christmas Break

One more semester is over! I am now at home in Birmingham, enjoying a much anticipated christmas break. i finished up my last exam on thursday of last week and then made the 11 hour (including a leisurely 1.5 hour lunch with coach in Greenville) trip home down 85 and I-20. As I passed through Charlotte and reached the King's Mountain area I was met with the results of the ice storm that had swept through the region a couple of nights prior. The trees were outlined in ice, making for quite a beautiful landscape, but the power lines were on the receiving end of lots of downed limbs and trees. So the outcome was not so great for those who had to suffer through it. At the exit in Greenville, SC where I stopped to meet coach for lunch, most of the businesses still had no power. Ingles was having to toss all their refridgerated goods and CVS was unable to fill any perscriptions. I walked into Ingles to pick up a few random things and it was as cold in the store as outside, minus the wind.
Once home, I enjoyed a quick respite from the car and then it was down to south Alabama to spend Christmas a week early with my mom's family in the bustling metropolis of Brewton. They recently celebrated the opening of the town's 3rd fast-food restaurant. hahaha. not that small but close.
Now I am back in the 'ham and enjoying the lack of stress. I saw "Walk the Line" with Rebecca S. yesterday. Pretty good movie--I had no idea Johnny Cash had been through so much. I am hoping to see "Hoodwinked" and "Pride and Prejudice" before the break is over.
Well, off to some more relaxation :-)

i just experience the fifth one of the year...five blocks, five information dumps...not a coincidence. I feel like a flash drive at times: upload the data, download the data, delete, repeat. I am not so sure the flash drives ends up any smarter for it, so i am hoping that at that point my analogy breaks down. i guess we will find out come april and time for board studying!
But on to my pleasant topics: i now have NOTHING i have to do which is really an amazing thing. I went to the newest Harry Potter movie tonight with some equally releived fellow 2nd years. It was well done but the ending left me a little depressed. no more relevations though for those who have not seen it! It really is a good movie and worth the 7.50 or whatever outrageous price they are charging now.
Tomorrow is a momentous day in itself...the long awaiting Auburn vs. Alabama game....hopefully i will have another happy auburn-related post for tomorrow!

This handy little device allows the patient to scientifically describe the consistency of his or her stool to the physician when things, in the words of the lecturer, "don't go right down there."

#1 = Seperate hard lumps, like nuts
#2 = sausage-shaped but lumpy
#3 = like a sausage but with cracks on its surface

That was just possibly the most awesome game ever...31-30 Auburn over Georgia...how 'bout them dawgs, now, huh?!? I took a well-timed break from GI and headed over to a friend's house to watch the drama unfold...i have to admit it was a tense few hours but the excitement made it all the better...i dont think i could have ordered a better game. now if only LSU could lose....

Over the weekend, I shoveled a ton of one and saw lots of beautiful colored version of the other. For a service project we are supposed to do for our one non-science-based class in med school, my group is re-surfacing the back yard of a lady who recently was confined to a wheelchair. she now can not get to her back yard and garden due to all of the rocks (she gets stuck), so our job is to remove all the old rocks and put down a surface known as chapel hill grit along with a soil stabilizer that supposedly makes it more concrete-like. this weekend was the shovel-up-the-old-stuff weekend and in a couple of weeks we will be putting down the new surface. I never suspected how hard it would be to shovel rocks--but we ended up spending 3 hours there on Saturday. check out below the before and after shots.
The leaves are definitely at thier peak now in terms of colors...i am going to try to get some pics of them up soon...as long as they stick around long enough. today i went for a bike ride and it was be-a-u-ti-ful.
besides shoveling rocks and enjoying the awesome weather, i joined kevin at the first exhibition game for the tar heels basketball team on friday. neither of us got the ceiling fan tickets (boo!) so we figured we better see them while we can!
the rest of the weekend i worked on this awful creation called a GI Take Home Exam. I never knew how frustrating a take home exam could be until this one. Either the question was totally cryptic ("the patient presents with pain in the RUQ, fatigue, and nausea"....umm, what could that NOT be?) or the answers appeared to have no correlation with the clinical scenario that preceeded them. ugg. i am about to click submit and be done with the whole disgusting thing.

A Halloween treat

I had heard that Franklin Street was the place to be on Halloween. That it was "crazy," that people came from all over the state, and that I needed to see it. So i did :-)
We had our respiratory block exam on monday morning...not one of those tests you really want to remember after you finish it...I am perfectly content to never see my grade on it. So I was glad to switch gears to the fun mode as soon as possible. I resurrected an old costume from the Furman days...a hula dancer...so that made the prep time much shorter. We first gathered at Nate's (another second year) for a halloween "macabre mascarade" then after some awesome food and even better diguises, moved over to Franklin to see exactly what it was all about. And it was crazy. It is hard to describe...just imagine about 8 or so blocks full of everything from cookie monster and 50 or so angels to a One Night-Stand and UNC basketball player want-to-be's and a guy in Leiderhousen. The pictures above will hopefully give you a little taste of experience. Suffice it to say, that I have never seen anything like it - and doubt I will again...at least until next year!

An Ode to my laptop

well, as you can guess i am not feeling to fond of my laptop at the moment. yesterday as i was sitting in class typing notes about some lung disease (they all run together) it froze. at first i thought, oh no the virus came back (i had a virus...actually two of them...last week...so i am really having a good october in terms of computers so far). but then, my laptop decided to throw me a curve ball by flashing the screen at me, going into what i now think must have been safe mode and delivery me the message of "Display Driver no longer responding, save work, click OK, and computer will shut down"
being the obstinate person that i am i decided to see what would happen if i tried to type on my PP while in safe mode. it did not go so well. besides the fact that i could not distinguish where the granuloma was on the histological section I had been staring at when my computer froze (as if that is a change from any other day), before i moved on to the slide the rest of the class was on, the screen went a lovely black. and then would not turn back on.
seeing that i was already a bit distracted and there was only 5 min left in class (though still a good 20 PP slides left to go through) i just left and went to OIS (i have a much more entertaining named for them than the Office of Information Services but i will leave that for another day...they fixed my virus last week so i have to give them credit there).
to make a story already too long a bit shorter, i am now typing on a loaner laptop from the main campus IT support folks while they tinker with mine...

hello out there...
here is the promised recounting of my weekend...a week late. sorry about that.
My plan was to see friends in greenville, sc and then head on down to Atlanta friday night after dinner. I never quite made it to Altanta...see above for the reason. yep. I totalled my jeep in the midst of the rain and darkness while trying to get onto I-385. I am just thankful that no one was hurt (save a few bruises i got) and i was in Greenville so I could call on good friends from my undergrad days. My parents were already planning on coming up to meet me in Chapel Hill, so i instead met them in Greenville and they toted me and all my crap back to my aparment. so i spent the rest of my fall break searching around for a replacement for the jeep. and i can announce, my new car: a honda accord, silver, complete with sun roof. i have to say it is pretty sweet...and amazing how well everything worked out. all i can do is be THANKFUL! but just to add a little more stress to the whole process, my laptop (which contains pretty much all the data in my life) contracted a couple of nasty viruses on tuesday. Good ol OIS cleaned it up though...and did not even have to wipe the hard drive. so my data is safe...or at least until the next virus comes knocking. so that was my fall break. life is slowly getting back to normal now. i got to see the furman CC team run in the Winthrop Invite this weekend (more pics from that) and spend the night with erin in charlotte which was a blast. my parents stayed in NC until today....a much better weekend all around :-)

the past week and a half has been eventful at best. the full story is not complete yet so i will save the "big" stuff for a later post. but seeing lots of friends from school brought up some issues i have been thinking about for the past couple of months and have not quite gotten around to putting down in blog form. so i figure, when better to do that than fall break? here goes. it seems everybody i talk to from furman is in a similar location in terms of thier stage of life: successfully finished with college and now wondering, "what next?" and "so this is what life after college is like?" some are in master's programs, some back from an overseas program, all not quite sure where they want to go from here.

i had (and still have) similar questions and find it encouraging in a wierd, possibly sick, way. i guess it just helps me to realize that i am not the only one thinking a certain way...like they say, misery likes company (j/k) :-) no, but seriously: i think we are all realizing exactly how blessed we were at furman--surrounded by close friends who were loyal to each other, had similar values, mindsets, and a whole range of interests. it is a situation that will be hard to replicate. also, for the first time in our relatively short lives we dont have an obvious next step. (now at this point i have a fairly different experience considering the fact that i have the next 7 odd years of my life fairly well ironed out)

now, several of my friends have found themselves in smaller programs with a student body that has a high percentage of married folks (not that i am against marriage or anything! but it just creates a different dynamic in terms of forming friendships with classmates) and those with values very different from our own...such that the tight relationships we had formerly will be hard to re-create. my own class is large in comparison, but the composition is very different from that of the undergraduate furman population. the lack of a team to run with, a sportsmed dept. to complain about, and a coach to chat with is also a big part of the adjustment as well. i guess you could say it is "welcome to the real world they said to me, condescendingly, take a seat." ok, so i must immidiately apologize for quoting the singer of that song....it was just too perfect though.

so, i am afraid this is a rather depressing post (and i am really not this depressed college grad sitting in a barren apartment staring at re-runs on Lifetime) which i apologize for...but it just feels good to get the thoughts out there.

as of 10am this morning, i am DONE with cardio, and as a result DONE with school for a WEEK AND A HALF. i am a tad excited if you cannot tell. Next week i will be in Asheville, NC for Community Week (shadowing physicians, interviewing patients, doing a few physical exams...hey, it sounds like doctor stuff :-0) and then i have fall break...so it is really just a lovely thing. as for now, i am off on a bike ride (hopefully not as rough as the last one i posted about!)

a biker's tirade

sometimes i wonder what gets into people. this afternoon, i was heading out on a ride north of chapel hill in search of a couple of hours away from the noise of med school, etc. i had passed through the busy-ness of chapel hill and reached what was usually the more peaceful portion of the ride...lots of open fields, houses far away from the road, not as much traffic. you get the picture. i was biking along, minding my own business when a row of cars approached in the opposite lane. I generally do not pay much mind to cars when they are not in my lane and today was no different. that is, until a car (civic or something along those lines) with its driver's side window rolled down passed by and simultaneously a large, dense, dark object traveling rather quickly slammed into my left forearm. "they just hit me!" was my initial reaction. then i realized that the car itself could not have physically hit me, but instead something they threw out of the car. i was in shock for a few minutes, just rode with my arm held next to my chest wondering how large it was going to swell up. then i just got mad...why nail a biker? for laughs? to look cool? so i have a nice welp on the side of my arm that is slowly becoming rather colorful. now i get nervous when cars whiz by with their window down...is another object going to come flying?
well, that is it...that is my tirade. not too much of a tirade i dont guess...i have had a while to cool down a bit. at the time, all i wanted to do was turn around, bike as fast as i could after the car, beat on thier window and....then i realized car vs. bike never turns out too well for the bike and just kept pedaling away.

what a day. that is about all you can say about it. ok, ok, i guess i will try to elaborate a little more: so i got up at 5:30 to get in a run...why not wait until a more reaonable (or at least light) hour you ask?...well, keep reading.
so my first class was at 8am, which meant i caught the 7:20 A bus. I learned about cardiac physiology and pathology until 2pm (with a nice hour lunch break i have to add) which was informative. then i headed over to berryhill hall and had ICM (another name for class...lots of listening to hearts, etc) from 2 till 4:30. so we are now going on 8 1/2 hours of class. (it was supposed to go until 5 so i was happy :-) ). i got some reading and assignments done in the library until a quarter of 6 when the real excitement of the day commenced....the pelvic exam session. that's right: from 6 until 10 tonight i have been learning the pelvic exam. it is really pretty much everything you are thinking right now. but, hey, after seeing 3 other med students and our teacher perform one on a patient (and doing one myself) i have to say i feel rather prepared for using a speculum, should the need ever arise.
so, i have now officially been in class (minus an hour lunch and dinner) from 8 until 10. that is am and pm for those that skipped the above paragraph. that's alot of med school. so i think i am NOT going to be doing any reading tonight. my bed is looking really nice. sweet dreams...

i made it to my first UNC football game this evening. yes, i know, if i was a true UNC fan this would not be my first game, but i am still in the learning phase of being a Tar Heal. we were playing Wisconsin. the score was actually pretty close (7 - 3) up until 7 or so minutes to go. but our defense was the only reason--i am hoping the offense gets a little more accurate as the games go on or it could be a long season. it was a great reason to not study though. the weather was still warm but it was a nice night--the rain held off despite rumors of a tornado warning.
as for the rest of my day....well, i spent about 5 hours at SHAC this morning--it went really smoothly though so that was nice. then i did a little work (wouldn't feel like a day without it!) and went for a 34 or so mile bike ride. the weather was hot again (after a cool, breezy run yesterday) so i was glad for my water bottle.
up on the docket for tomorrow? church, study, southern season to buy some tea with erin, and then small group....and maybe squeeze a little more studying in--or even better--a run before bed. so adios!

after blood and cancer...came the heart. we are now learning about such things as preload, afterload, and contractility. way cooler in my opinion than blood and cancer, if i can say that without sounding like a total nerd :-)
this weekend is looking pretty good. tomorrow is the last well child clinic at SHAC (free medical clinic run by the health schools at UNC) so i will be slaving away in the front desk and vitals from too early till mid afternoon. then i am hoping to get in a nice ride north and west of chapel hill before going to UNC's first home game--go Tar Heels!!
but to do all that requires sleep--so this post is going to be short.

well, the dreaded heme/onc block is almost over...that is if I can cram all this information into my brain over the next day and a half. this morning i took a hiatus from the world of studying by biking 50 +/- miles up to Lake Hycoe at the northern edge of NC. a couple of docs from UNC that sponsor the CMDA branch at UNC own a lake house up there and several people drove up--i decided to take the less popular method of two wheels and and lots of pedalling. the trip was awesome--miles and miles of road through the middle of nowhere (and a quite beautiful nowhere at that). we did a bit of tubing and goofing off in the lake before DRIVING back...that's right--no century ride for me. i was standing on the dock around noon thinking how amazing it would be to not have to study and be able to hang out all day...oh well. then it has been studying since...except for a dinner at the Loop to catch up with a friend from carolina med who is taking the year off doing research in atlanta. she was in town for the weekend-- it was great to see her, and made me wish for the second time today that i did NOT have a heme/onc exam monday morning. tests are such an annoyance!! well, sorry for the rambling. i am trying all i can think of to put off reading about pediatric tumors and hematology...two more lectures to go and then to bed!

well, classes have started back up once again...we are about a month in by now I guess. another exam is looming so it is the perfect time to procrastinate a bit and put up a few pictures from a sunnier, happier time....the summer. the last weekend before classes began, the MDPhD program took us all to the beach for a retreat--a few too many meetings, but at least we got some time tubing, laying in the sand, and playing a bit of volleyball! ah, to be on the beach again. the tests will keep coming, so i am sure the posts will as well--until then!

i have now found the perfect way to waste time. it is called google earth and can be downloaded from www.earth.google.com--i love maps and globes, so i guess i am especially susceptible to becoming addicted to this sort of thing. just last night i typed in Grand Canyon, AZ and then "flew" through the canyon and then visted NY, NY and using the buildings function could weave my way through the skyscrapers. check it out.

some people like to use a cold shower to knock the cobwebs out of their heads in the morning...i have found a bike ride to be much more effective. call me crazy, but this summer i have enjoyed the lack of 8am classes by instead spending quality time out on the roads outside town on my bike--a Specialized Dolce Sport--nothin' fancy, but light and quick enough for my tours of the surrounding countryside. one morning i got the bright idea to take along my digital camera to try to capture the views from my bike as the sun rose during the ride...somehow pictures can never do the real thing justice, but here are a few of my attempts!

well, i woke up today in chapel hill not sure how I was going to spend the fourth, but it turned out pretty good. I slept in since I did not exactly sleep a ton over the weekend and then after getting up and going to get some food, I went for a long ride (on a bike...a Specialized Dolce Sport to be exact) out to Pittsboro and back and then went over to a fellow MDPhD's apartment along with several other med students to eat, relax, and hang out...good times. So happy Independence Day and I hope your day was as good :-)

hey everyone--now i am in lab, slaving away in the large, square, gray buildings called Kenan Labs. thankfully the hours are very decent so i have found time to do a myriad of other activities as well. i am currently rather addicted to riding my road bike, i head over to SHAC clinic every Wednesday night and have gotten the chance to get involved with a bible study with some other first and second years at UNC SOM. Tonight I was in Greensboro eating dinner with some friends from college...good times. hope the summer is treating everyone as well as it is treating me!

Well, as of wednesday at 10:37 (or something like that), when i assured the online testing module that I really did want to exit the physiology final, i was finished with the first year of med school here at UNC. A great, wierd, surreal feeling, esp. since I still can't believe it when I say I am in med school to begin with.

But now the summer has begun, and I can let my mind begin to delete all that I have crammed into it for the past 9+ months...oh but wait--then there's that thing called BOARDS. Guess the forgetting should be postponed for a year. oh well, at least summer has begun :-)

I am now relaxing for a week in Birmingham, AL (my home town--go b'ham!!) before heading back to chapel hill for a few weeks of research in a chem lab run by holden thorp. my goals for the week include sleep, wasting time on facebook, sleep, wasting time on IM, sleep, catching up on ALIAS, and then a little more sleep. should be good.

For the past week i worked along side 24 fellow (and very amazing) students from UNC as we took part in an Alternative Spring Break in Wheeling, W. Va. We had traveled 8 hours north of chapel hill to help out a congregation who had been the target of racial attacks, including arson. The first half of the week we traveled up to Weirton, W. Va. where we were "loaned out" to another church which had been damaged when the Ohio River flooded during the recent hurricane, Ivan. For the last half of the week we stayed in Wheeling and worked in the future activities center for the congregation there. Below are lot of pictures taken during the trip--enjoy!
